Polygamy occurs when a spouse is married to more than one person at the same time. Polygamous marriages have been illegal in the United States since 1878 when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that one of the basic tenets of Western civilization was the marriage of one man to one woman. Therefore, anyone who marries for the second time without ending a first marriage could be charged with polygamy.
